Dakar & Gorée Island

Description

Day

Departure in the morning from the hotel for a city tour of Dakar, with a visit to the various points of interest in the capital: the African Remembrance Cathedral with its Byzantine-style architecture, the presidential palace with its red guards, Independence Square with its colonial-style buildings that rival modern buildings, the railway station and its typical spice market. Pass in front of the large mosque of Dakar, with its imposing minarets, which brings together thousands of faithful every Friday. Visit the artisan village of Soumbédioune and its different trades (basket makers, sculptors, weavers, jewelers…) and a sand painting gallery.

You will then head to the pier to take the boat that will take you to Gorée Island after a 20-minute crossing. Gorée is an island steeped in history and marked by the sad slave trade. Lunch and then visit the Fort d’Estrées, which now houses the historical museum, visit the House of Slaves, stroll on the cliff of the island called the Castel where you can see the Gorée Almadies Memorial monument. Wander through the charming alleys of the island, lined with houses dating from the colonial era. Return to Dakar in the afternoon and continue to your hotel.
